Avoid including every technology you’ve ever touched on your resume.

Most software developers have a long list of technologies they’ve worked with. But should you include all of them on your resume? The answer is no. You should only include the technologies that are relevant to the job you’re applying for. Here’s how to decide which technologies to include on your resume.

1. Read the job description

Most, if not all, job descriptions include technologies that candidates must have experience with and technologies that are nice to have experience with. Make sure you include the technologies that are required in the job description on your resume. If you have experience with any of the nice-to-have technologies, include those as well.

2. Remove outdated technologies

Remove outdated and obsolete technologies that are no longer used by the industry. If you have experience with a technology that is no longer relevant, it’s best to leave it off your resume.

If job description requires experience with AWS, but you have only worked with Google Cloud, include that on your resume. While it’s not the same technology, it shows that you have experience with cloud computing.

4. Do not include minor technologies

If you use a framework, say Spring Boot, you do not need to include every component of the framework like Hibernate, Thymeleaf, etc. Just include the main framework.

5. Include cutting-edge technologies

If you have experience with cutting-edge technologies, include them on your resume. Employers are always looking for candidates who have experience with the latest technologies.

Remember, your resume is not a laundry list of every technology you’ve ever touched. It’s a marketing document that should highlight your most relevant skills and experience for the job you are applying to.
