A picture is worth a thousand words.
In most cases, a picture on a resume is not necessary. However, there are some places, for example LinkedIn profile, or some countries where it is common to include a picture on a resume.
If you decide to include a picture on your resume, here are some dos and don’ts to keep in mind:
- Make sure picture is recent.
- Make sure picture is clear and well-lit.
- Wear attire that is not necessarily professional, but appropriate for the job you are applying for.
- Make sure picture is not too casual or too formal.
- Make sure picture is not too close or too far.
- Do not include action shots, unless you are applying for a job where it is relevant for example a gym trainer.
- Do not include pictures with other people in it.
- Do not include a picture where you are frowning or making a silly face.
- Do not include a picture where you are wearing sunglasses or a hat.
Ideally, avoid including a picture on your resume unless it is required or common practice in your country or industry. If you do decide to include a picture, make sure it is professional and appropriate for the job you are applying for.
